There are many people who like to sip at a glass of red wine at dinner, and since 1979, when a study looked at the correlation between heart disease and wine consumption in 18 developed countries, more and more people are warming to the idea that red wine can be good for us. What Are Polyphenols?
Polyphenols are micronutrients that can be found in dozens of different foods, such as cloves, dark chocolate, beans, nuts, vegetables, and grape skins. Polyphenols contain antioxidants that are thought to provide a variety of health benefits, including digestion issues, weight management, diabetes symptoms, and cardiovascular diseases, like heart disease.
Resveratrol is a naturally occuring phytoalexin, which are antimicrobial and often antioxidative substances produced by plants when they are injured. Resveratrol acts like an antioxidant, producing anti-inflammatory effects. It can be found in red wine, grapes, berries, and peanuts. Resveratrol is highly concentrated in the skins of grapes, which are an essential part in the fermentation of red wine.
Studies surrounding the benefits of resveratrol have been limited and use higher concentrations than can typically be consumed from food. Many studies use a dose of about 100 mg or more of resveratrol, however, a five oz glass of wine only has around 1 mg of resveratrol. So while studies have seen positive benefits, keep in mind that it’s nearly impossible to get the same dose in the food you consume.

Lower Blood Pressure
Resveratrol may help lower systolic blood pressure, which can occur as we age and as our arteries stiffen. When systolic blood pressure is high, it can be a risk factor for heart disease. By consuming foods with resveratrol, it may help the blood vessels relax, lowering blood pressure.
Protects the Brain
There have been several studies completed that suggest red wine may prevent damage to brain cells. This is due to resveratrol’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

In one animal study, researchers suggest that resveratrol suppressed ovarian tumor regrowth after chemotherapy by preventing the uptake of glucose, which are critical to cancer cell’s energy supply. In other test-tube studies, resveratrol has also been shown to fight gastric, colon, skin, breast, and prostate cancer.
Due to resveratrol’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, it can help reduce oxidative stress that may lead to premature aging. In a study completed on mice, the animals were given a diet of high-fat, high-calorie foods and a resveratrol supplement. Mice on this diet lived roughly 30% longer than mice in a control group. Mice who were given resveratrol also had less fatty deposits in their arteries and liver, suggesting that even with a poor diet, resveratrol supplements could prevent obesity and symptoms of aging.
